The plant is not too high to grow. More or less it can grow up to 12 feet. It has prickly (thorny) stems and leaves. The leaves are double or triple pinnate, serrated leaflets and ovate in form.

It has branched, downy panicles with many umbels of white flowers. It has juicy and pleasant berries with black color. The bark has no good taste. It has bitter principle but with many uses including other parts of the plants in herbal application.


Tincture preparation from berries gives relief to pain of damaged teeth. It has chemical compound to stop colicky stomach due to excessive gas. It was chosen as best alternative for the treatment of rheumatism.

Making a compound from the plant is good in the prevention of cholera. The bark tincture has the ability to cleanse skin diseases. It was proven to be helpful in the treatment of syphilis. The bark was found to be a stimulating alterative.

Araliin is a glucoside the plant contain. It was found to be valuable against dry throat and mouth. It is better sialogogue. It gives relief to sore throat.
